Evolution in Action Summary

Matthew Gaviola
Evolution in Action Article Summary
Elvino Angeloni
Instructor: Jason Eichelberger
Physical Anthropology, 214
Summary Evolution is ever evolving. Evolution is always in Action, and that is the Article by Johnathan Weiner. You see, “Every Person is a product of evolutionary history, or all the biological changed that have brought humanity to its present form. (Lawsen, 2013, Pg. 6)” ‘There are “more than 250 people around the world [who] are observing and documenting evolution (Weiner, 2014, Pg. 24).” It’s Charles Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection that has always been a hot topic among these 250+ people. Several Species have been studied by biologists and enthusiast alike and that they revealed significant evidence of “evolution in action.” Evolution in bacteria, finches, monkey flowers, sockeye salmon, mammals, and other are rapidly evolving. Although many of them are split on their viewpoints or acceptance of Darwin’s theory about evolution, there is and has been evidence of natural selection. Peter & Rosemary Grant went on Darwin’s Island, The Galapagos Islands, studied many of Darwin’s Finches. When the Grants were analyzing the finches, they notice that their beaks were different. When they dove deeper into why there were different beaks, they discovered that “the finches were evolving rapidly (Angeloni, 2014).” Because of this, also found the same gene in humans that mold the fetus’s face. We humans influence not just the lives of species but the biology of them, by studying their individual populations. For example, Trophy Hunting of bighorn mountain sheep. Hunters would kill the bighorn mountain sheep for over thirty years, and now the rams have gotten smaller, same with Atlantic cod off the coasts of Newfoundland as well. But did that deter for human consumption? Actually, it’s evident that the smaller ram have had better chances of passing on their genes to…

Compare and Contrast the Attitudes to Travelling to Paris in Text 1 and Text 2 and Explain the Expectations of Paris that are Conveyed in the Texts.

Compare and Contrast the Attitudes to Travelling to Paris in Text 1 and Text 2 and Explain the Expectations of Paris that are Conveyed in the Texts.
Text 1, ‘Stories are Waiting in Paris’ is multimodal text of a transcript for a Eurostar advert. A multimodal text relies on more than one medium, meaning that you not only have to read but listen and watch. This makes it more powerful as it appeals to your different senses, for example the sound of the ‘hurdy-gurdy’ music playing continuously in the background is atmospheric and so helps you to set the scene of Paris. The use of the pronoun ‘you’ll’ appeals to the audience, “maybe you’ll go left” as it directly addresses them making the individual feel that they are the particular person that the advertisers care about which helps narrow the gap between the audience and the advertiser making the advert more personal and so more appealing. the consistent use of the word ‘maybe’ is syntactic parallelism where the structure is repeated again and again. The use of maybe also takes the position of a discourse marker and is powerful in the advertisement as it takes you to different place and the beginning of a different story and shows indicates that you many options at your disposal.
From text one, your expectations of Paris is that it is a very busy and bustling place it suggests that you will never be bored because there are so many options and things that are available to you. The transcript is very fast paced indicated by the lack of long pauses in the transcript possibly suggesting that Paris itself is also as fast paced. The phrase ‘hopefully not him’ may also suggest that as well as the joyous atmosphere and people, indicated by sounds made such as the kissing and skipping audio there are also some unsavoury characters but you would not like to meet when in Paris.
Text 2, ‘Mile by Mile London to Paris’, is similar to text one in that is a text that is designed to attract tourists to the area. It is an…

Outline the 3 Marks of Existence and explain how they could affect a Buddhist’s attitude to life

The Buddha taught that the 3 marks of existence are universal truths, thus they apply to all living beings. These three marks are dukkha, anicca and anatta. Dukkha means suffering, or a general sense of dissatisfaction with life. The Buddha first identified this as inevitable when he left the palace and saw the four sights of old age, illness and death. He realised that dukkha would affect us all, and began to search for the truth. In Buddhism 3 types of dukkha are understood – ordinary, dukkha caused by impermanence and subtle dukkha. Ordinary dukkha refers to everyday experiences of suffering such as having a cold. The Buddha gained further insight into this when he looked deeper into the view of the man ploughing the field. He realised that on all levels, from the man to the worms, was dukkha. Dukkha caused by impermanence is also inevitable, as anicca affects all beings. Our attachments to things, feelings and situations cause dukkha because they do not last. For example, a relationship ending – we suffer because the person has changed or feelings have changed. By accepting this anicca-dukkha we can learn to cope with suffering and loss. Anicca means impermanence and relates to the fact that all conditioned existence in samsara is impermanent. The only constant state is nibbana. Both living and non-living things are impermanent. For example, rocks weather and metal rusts, as well as humans ageing and snakes sheading their skin. We can learn to cope with this impermanence and it can motivate us to gain a state of enlightenment. The story pf Gotami and the Mustard Seed shows this as Gotami learns that suffering is inevitable and when she dealt with her loss by accepting anicca she was able to move on. This also highlights the belief that attachments are what cause dukkha. Anatta is the concept of no self. The Buddha taught that we have no soul or continuing self that moves through the cycle pf samsara. We use the idea of ‘me’ as a convenience. The…
